When and where did you get started in the floral industry?
I started working in the New Zealand floral industry around 30 years ago in a shop called Margo’s of Mt Eden which is now long gone. I learned all the important design techniques from a veteran florist named Audrey Woods, and used to go to her place after work each day for lessons.
What attracted you to the floral industry?
As my mother, now retired, worked as a professional florist I vowed to never get into the industry. Growing up making endless amounts of bows for her in the evening was enough to put anyone off! Being a florist wasn’t my career choice rather it chose me, after working during a summer vacation, I got hooked and fell in love with floral design and the rest is history.
How would you describe your signature style?
At The Wild Bunch we produce Fresh, Fabulous, and Fashionable Flowers. Our team here prides itself on creating unique and diverse floral designs.
To date, what has been your career highlight?
I can’t say I have one particular ‘career highlight’ per say, my history in New Zealand’s floral industry has been one big adventure. I have an intense love of flowers and for what I do. Every day I get to meet interesting people and to interpret their vision’s into beautiful floral designs.
What is the biggest challenge in your opinion facing the NZ floral industry?
Fresh flowers tend to be regarded as a ‘luxury’ category and not considered as an ‘everyday’ item in New Zealand, this attitude is slowly changing but people still do not regard a perfect high quality bloom or even a bunch of foliage as having been commercially grown to perfection for longevity and quality. I think it is a shame when flowers are cheapened by some retailers supplying poor quality abundantly without care for the product giving fresh flowers a bad reputation. Growing up with flowers in my home I consider fresh blooms to be an accent to any room and an easy way to freshen up a space and like any of my clients I expect them to last.
What’s your favourite flower?
How can I pick only one! I have a favourite flower per season! To name a few:
Where do you look for inspiration?
My staff, my environment, the season, a look through a book, an afternoon in the garden, so many things inspire me every day.
What kind of floristry services do you offer?
From the simple to the sublime, we offer an extensive range of quality floral services.
Do you always have fresh flowers at home?
Yes! I find I use fresh flowers as my reward once I have done my house cleaning. Nothing like a freshly cleaned room with a beautiful flower arrangement to provide the finishing touch! Particularly loving Chocolate cymbidiums at home right now have the perfect vase for them!
What sort of trends in the NZ Floral Industry do you see in the future?
At The Wild Bunch we try to set trends, not follow them. We are always keeping our eyes and ears open. Customers constantly come in with some new inspiration for us to draw from and you will never be disappointed when you leave our shop with unique and beautiful flowers.
