An Interview with a Flower Merchant- Flowers of St. Johns

A brief Q&A with Senior Florist and owner Kerry McCullough

Having the freshest stock of seasonal flowers, if you want a cool white flower arrangement for your minimalist modern studio or you want bright exuberant flowers or any point in between, you will find the flowers you need at Flowers of St. Johns!

When and where did you get started in the floral industry?

I started in the floral industry around twenty years ago in Denver, Colorado. I studied an 8 week floristry course and went on to work in my own florist called ‘Monday’s Flowers’ in Vail, Colorado.

What attracted you to the floral industry?

Originally it was because I was sick and tired of waitressing! After studying and starting my career in floristry I fell in love with the opportunity I had to be creative in my line of work.

How would you describe your signature style?

At Flowers of St. Johns I love to use bright colours, clean lines and provide mass quantities of unique flowers in each arrangement. Big, bold and beautiful!

To date, what has been your career highlight?

In the 90’s I had the opportunity to design large events for European Fragrances and the best party I design was for a fragrance launch at the Met in New York!

What’s your favourite flower?

I would have to say the classic Rose. It’s perfect for any occasion, never goes out of fashion and is always in season!

Where do you look for inspiration?

I follow North American floral design in magazines and online articles. Being a member of Interflora has benefits as they host an internationally known floral designer twice a year for us to watch and learn new techniques from.

What kind of floristry services do you offer?

Flowers of St. Johns offer all types of floristry services such as: funerals, weddings, special events, and everyday occasions.

Do you always have fresh flowers at home?

Yes! I think a beautiful bunch of flowers add fragrance and warmth to a room.
