An Interview with a Flower Merchant- Iain Stephens Floral Design

A brief Q&A with Senior Florist Lisa Congdon

Iain Stephens Floral Design has been trading for over 20 years! Not only do they provide top quality flowers for gifts, births, funerals etc, they have also helped hundreds of brides over the years with stunning wedding flowers. Function and corporate work is also a specialty of Iain Stephens Floral Design.

When and where did you get started in the floral industry?

At high school, doing a work experience course with a florist once a week; Urbane Flowers, Hamilton. I also studied Horticulture & Floriculture while at high school.

What attracted you to the floral industry?

My Nanna had a beautiful huge garden, always with spring bulbs, a massive flowering magnolia tree which she adores. She was always into gardening & flowers. Being about to work with such a beautiful and delicate products which I love!

How would you describe your (or your shop’s) signature style?

I design in a lush compact style. I love unusual greenery and playing with different colour combos

To date, what has been your career highlight?

I have had a few ‘career highlights’: I loved doing flowers for Breakfast TV & the rugby world cup in the past. Designing for my friends weddings always brings a tear to my eye. And where I am currently working, as Manager at Iain Stephens Floral design has been a huge highlight!

What is the biggest challenge in your opinion facing the NZ floral industry?

I think the New Zealand floral industry faces the same challenges as most! With flowers considered ‘luxury’ items they wouldn’t be on the consumer’s high priority list during these expensive times. Flowers aren’t an extravagant purchase and can be quite inexpensive and beautiful. That’s what a florist is for, you give them a budget and they work within it!

What’s your favourite flower?

I have too many to choose from! Some of my favourites are: David Austin Roses, Peonies, Magnolia Flowers, the list goes on; they are all too beautiful to pick just one.

Where do you look for inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration everywhere! Sometimes browsing on the internet, flipping through magazines, looking at fashion blogs, or even just experimenting in the shop.

What kind of floristry services does Iain Stephens Floral Design offer?

Currently at Iain Stephens floral design we offer very cool 'flowers for home' night classes which run for 8 weeks, great for beginners and a chance to wow your friends at home with your own master pieces. The same as many other florists we design for any occasion (Funerals, Weddings, Corporate, Every day occasions, etc) and we deliver Nationwide, and International through Interflora.

Do you always have fresh flowers at home?

Yes I always have fresh flowers at home; my spring bulbs are flowering so I have a vase of ‘Early Cheer’ daffodils in the bathroom!
